CAITLIN PARK

Caitlin Park is not your average neo-folk musician. A singer-songwriter from Sydney, she has single-handedly taken this genre and pulled it to the left with her abstract composition, electro-acoustic stylings and film nostalgia.
After absorbing her mother’s obsession with words, Caitlin Park’s fascination with the elegance of language was nourished by a part-time post at a cult video store around the corner from her family home. This culminated in a piece of music based on the murder plot scene in Hitchcock’s Dial M For Murder – her reverse soundtrack. Then, songs that were written for short films began to take shape as folk snapshots riddled with sound effects and dialogue taken from 1940/50s films. Caitlin Park’s own lyrics juxtapose these clippings and are executed with deep, smooth vocals that come from somewhere far below her ribcage.
Caitlin has bunkered down after releasing her highly acclaimed debut EP Warriors With Wild Hearts and, after several months spent catching sound with her field microphone, she is ready to release her full length record… MILK ANNUAL.
A sprawling, intricate and heart-warming foray into the soundscapes of old films, audio books, spoken word, and minimalistic musical arrangement, MILK ANNUAL is as much a exploration in found sound and sonic design as it is an exhibition of modern folksong construction. You will hear kids screaming, the clink of roped boats, struck matches and irregular heartbeats mixed with layered vocal sampling and overlaid by a singer with a voice that wraps you up in a warm blanket. Masterfully pulled together by Liam Judson (Belles Will Ring, Cloud Control, Sister Jane), and featuring performances by Holly Throsby, Aidan Roberts and a song co-written by Peter Broderick, MILK ANNUAL is inspired by Steve Reich, the Penguin Cafe Orchestra, the sonic innovation of CocoRosie and The Sleeping State, Caitlin’s debut effort is an entanglement of excellent ideas.
MILK ANNUAL is OUT NOW on Broken Stone Records.
